Cold Stone makes good enough cake batter that I just order it plain. Also, Otto makes great Olive Oil gelato. They put sea salt on it and it makes it even better.

If you want some pretty authentic Italian-style gelato, try the Tarallucci e Vino bakery and cafe on the corner of 10th St. and 1st or 2nd Aves. They make it only in the summer.

Manhattan Fruitier. Can't say enough about it. Try the banana lace...out of this world

I'm a big fan too, especially: lychee, ginger, almond cookie, cherry pistachio & mocha chip. They make ice cream, not gelato. Cones is excellent too, but it's gelato. Two different things, despite the similarities. I think the best gelato I've had recently was from the cart at Osteria del Circo (summer only). Mario Batali's gelato seems more like American ice cream to me.

I was very sad when Peter's on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn closed some years ago. Their ice cream was amazing.

i know - pete's was amazing - and a great place to sit and spend some time too - which unfortunately you can't do at chinatown ice cream factory!

A couple of subsequent visits to Cones would make me revise my "excellent" comment. I've found a number of the flavors quite underwhelming, and I don't think the overall quality warrants its lofty reputation, and certainly not its price tag. I also feel Batali's gelato is overrated, though it's better than Cones. I'm sticking with Osteria del Circo as the best Italian-style I've had in NY.
