Mike's Hockey Burger

russkar Sep 28, 2006 03:18 PM

Sometimes it takes 25 years of patronizing a restaurant to find the best food item on the menu?
This morning I found it! I finally tried the Steak(Skirt) and Eggs, Unbelievable! 7.95

Very good breakfasts there. Especially as you note, the steak. My favorite for lunch is the Mike's Special on a french roll. It's normally served on Armenian bread. It comes with a very very good pickle. Chili fries are good as well.

Hi... Is the actual name of the restaurant Mike's Hockey Burger?? General location, please? Thank you...

Mike's Hockey Burger is in E.L.A. on the N/W corner of Soto and Washington. The hockey-puck burger is a burger with a split polish sausage on top. Order the fries extra crispy. Very attentive and friendly service, good portions, lots of hockey and boxing memorabilia. Good place!

Excellent, thanks for the prompt response. If they allow 'rare' on the burgers, I'm there!

Sounds similar to the Big Mike burger in San Pedro, although he uses a split grilled hot link and the burger patty is about the size of a fist. Great stuff!

If they won't do the burgers rare enough for you, go for the Mike's Special, sort of an italian-style beef sandwich mentioned above. Their pastrami is good, and I think you can get the breakfast items all day.

If you are looking for an outstanding rare burger, on the westside, I hope you saw my post about an outstanding flame-grilled burger at lunch at Philly West, better known for their bar atmosphere and cheesesteaks.

Hi Nosh, yes I did see the previous Philly West burger recco. I work in that area, so thanks for the reminder!

Mike's Hockey Burger is a family run, warm place. The signature "Hockey Burger", described correctly by 'Nosh' on this page, is admittedly slightly dopey. Hockey Burger history is explained on the walls along with Kings memorabilia. But Mike's Special, a generous mound of well-done, hot, thinly sliced beef on thin Armenian bread, is the only roast beef sandwich I've found east of the 5, and keeps Mike's Hockey Burger well out of the penalty box. He shoots... he scores!

Big Mike's closed? No hockey burger???

Where else can I get something like it?

Try heading down while the Dodgers are playing, get the sandwhich of your choice and bucket of beers (at the respectable price of $2 for domestic and $2.50 for imports I think) and then watch some baseball in this time capsule of a joint. Always fun.

Try the Armenian meat pie. Dirt cheap. Finely chopped and spiced lamb. I like it with swiss and onions only.

I use to cash my pay check at this place when I worked at UPS back in 1996. If I remember correctly, they also serve beer there. Or maybe we would by the beer somewhere else and drink it at Hockey Burger.

I"ve been several times with co-workers who love the place. It is friendly with big cheap food. I always found it greasy, bland and barely edible...everything you'd expect from a burger joint in Vernon. I don't think I'll be back.
