Looking for a quick breakfast spot in the east village. Bagels and sweets - with good coffee. Veniero's looks best so far but no bagels. Want something close to the subway so we can eat and be on our way. Love rugalach too.

I'm by no means an expert on the bagel issue, but I always thought David's Bagels on 14th & 1st was pretty solid. It's out of the way if you aren't planning to take the L, but always good. I'm not a sweets person, but I never noticed them there.

you could try smuggling a few bagels from david's into tarallucci e vino, which is on the corner of 10st and 1st ave. they've got fantastic sweets and good coffee, while david's has neither (though the bagels are great).

There's no place that has great both, imho...what I would do is go to Russ and Daughters (Houston between Orchard and Allen) and get bagels and the go to Veniero's or DeRoberti's for pastry.

It'd probably be easier to smuggle the sweets and coffee into David's than vice versa. It gets pretty busy at David's in the morning but not too many people stick around to eat in. You'd have a big wall of people between you and the counter. I doubt they'd care anyway.

I have to agree that no one can claim excellence (or even experience) in both categories. There are a few coffee houses in the area that seem to get their bagels from David's, so you might try that route.
