I'm partial to MacArthur's bakery. Recently, the Post published a recipe from one of the restaurants (1111 Mississippi?). I was surprised to see their version was basically the "homemade" recipe I make - using a cake mix, powdered sugar and butter. I do love that version too, though!

I traveled to St Louis every month for business and would bring home 2, 3 sometimes 4 gooey butter cakes from the Lake Forest Pastry Shop 7737 Clayton Rd. 314-863-7400. I haven't been there in a while but my mouth is watering just thinking about it.

Lake Forest is, regrettably, no longer in business, and has not been for a couple of years. It was sold in late 2002, but only lasted around a year or so afterwards. Very sad.

What do people think about Park Avenue Coffee? That they have 64 flavours is a bit gimmicky, but is the original flavour any good there? It's on my list of places to visit.

(i want to try the turtle, lemon, butter pecan and caramel pecan variations, and of course the traditional)

The MacArthur's bakery emphasizes the 'cake', Park Avenue Coffee emphasizes the 'gooey'. Much less substantial, but, to my mind, tastier. Also, some of the flavor variations offer a nice change of pace. If you are new to the phenom, do start with the classic, though, it's all about the butter, baby.. .When we went to Park Avenue for my daughter's birthday cake, they took her around to the fridge and showed her all her choices and let her choose what she wanted.
Although there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with the MacArthur's bakery version.
I've yet to try Gooey Louie. Maybe tomorrow?

Do they both use "quality" ingredients? I want real butter, etc. No cake mix and hydrogenated shortenings and stuff like that. I'll put MacArthur's on my google map, too. I don't know how I'm going to fit all that food into less than 48 hours!

Many of the Lake Forest specialties are being sold at Straub's, at least the one at Forsyth and Maryland in Clayton. And one must also consider the GBC at Gooey Louie's on Chippewa, which gets some cred, if only for that great name
