This was probably the only place of its kind that's vegetarian...You get 3 sides, rice, and soup for $3.50. The food has always been fresh and tasty. It was great news for vegetarians on a budget..so that their options are not just Happy Buddha or Boddhi Bodai.

I kept saying WAS, because I went by this weekend and was told that they can't continue like this. There just aren't enough business for them to stay competitive at such low prices...

They've retrenched; no more "Vegetarian" in the name.

    Here's the new menu: http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p150/squid-kun/4128MainSt/200611HappyFamilymenu1.jpg

    And some untranslated specials: http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p1...

I think those specials are all served over rice. I see braised beef and stewed chicken. My ability to read Chinese is very low. Some of those look like Shaolin -- must be some kickin' food! Certainly not veg

Not as cheap, but still a good deal, at a health food store in Flushing: Queens Health Emporium offers a $6.75 vegan Chinese plate. You get three dishes with brown rice, and the portions are very large and delicious. They also have soups, salads, deserts, fruit and vegetable juices. The food it served cafeteria style and there are tables upstairs. It is located at 159-01 Horace Harding Expressway, (on the North side of the L.I.E.) in Flushing. Phone number 718-358-6500. Take the #17 bus from the N.W. corner of Main Street & Roosevelt Ave. at the end of the 7 subway line. Get off the bus at 158th Street, where you will see an ugly pedestrian bridge going across the L.I.E. Once you walk across the bridge the health food store is right there. If you're driving, they have a parking lot. I don't live in the neighborhood but I make a special trip to go there because it is so wonderful.

I remember seeing this place about two years ago. It's in a basement of a Supermarket on Main St. I was also surprised by the low price. I remember just a few tables. Somehow I felt it was more of a convience for the supermarket shoppers. If this food stand is owned by the supermarket it may very well stay open. I've seen this type of business all over Flushing with meat and just $4.50 for 3 items and rice.
