New Portuguese resto in DT Calgary

On the C-Train this morning I noticed that what had been that Jewish deli in the Plaza 1000 building (7th Ave and 9 St, the main floor of an office tower- this was the place that had great potato pancakes and latkas and such) has been replaced by a new resto called "Alcatra." I googled it and discovered (1) Alcatra is a Portuguese dish of stewed beef, and (2) this is indeed an "Iberian," per the owner's description, restaurant.

While I'd rather have a plain old Churrasqueria than a place that says it offers "evening fine dining," it's neat to have another (this makes just two, if I am not mistaken) Portuguese place in Calgary.

Alcatra is truly an experience in itself. It's portuguese cuisine is much more exquisite than Mimo's. If you're looking for authentic Mediterannean Cuisine, Alcatra is the place to go. It's friendly host's/hostesses will greet you kindly. It's like no other that Calgary has to offer!

The Atlantic Pacific is the only Portuguese market in Calgary and is on 17th Ave.

I would agree. The food at Alcatra is better and the restaurant has a more pleasant environment. However, like John Manzo I would prefer a good churrasco to fine dining, which for this restaurant means decreasing the portion (who ever heard of Pork and Clams with only 4 clams) and charging the customer.

Yeah, it was great, but too small a portion and way too expensive IMHO.

I don't know if Gruman's moved or what- but the knishes and such at the Ukrainian counter at the Calgary Farmers' Market are better than Gruman's were IMO and cheaper too.

Yeah, Mimo's would be the other one.

            Gruman's is gone? Damn...

Is the other Portugese place you're thinking of Mimo's John?
