Dining near American Player's Theatre - Spring Green, WI
Meeting my Player's partners this coming Sunday for a 6PM curtain. Usually we carpool and do a pre-performance picnic (APT has the nicest picnic grove). This time everyone is coming from someplace other than home, so we have decided to dine out. Because of the picnic tradition, we have limited knowlege of eateries nearby theatre. We checked on the General Store in Spring Green, but they close at 4PM on Sunday, so that rules it out. Any recs?
There is a great recently opened organic/natural grocery store by the name of Local Choice Farm Market in Spring Green, WI that will be offering "picnic dinners" in the spring of 2007 for such occasions. This past summer while on the way to a friend's I came across this store and purchased their Andouille Sausage as a gift and a package for myself. It was terrific! My friend that lives in Spring Green has told me about the "picnic dinners" they will be offering with freshly made smoked lunch meats made right at the Markets own meat locker. All of their meat products are processed with all organic spices and the meat is raised on their own farm. All of their produce comes from local farms within the area and are reasonably priced, great tasting and extremely fresh! The next time I am out that way for a play at APT I intend on ordering a dinner from Local Choice and I will post back as to how it is . . . and if it is anything like their sausages I am sure it will be fantastic!!
As I said I would try out the Picnic Boxes at Local Choice Farm Market in Spring Green, WI. A few friends I were going out for the play and ordered the Traditional Smoked Salmon Wrap, Roast Beef (Organic Roast Beef) Sandwich, and the Organic Chicken Salad. It was ALL to Die for!!
There is a great 2 different salads and even a "homemade" Beer Cookie!!! The store is a great place on top of everything else we also purchased a bottle of wine to go with our supper . . .What anight to remember! I highly recommend the Local Choice Picnic Boxes for any occassion!!!
There is a woeful lack of great restaurants in the Spring Green area. I would still pick up a picnic on your way to the theater or do one of the "picnic dinners" that you can order through APT, especially as it's supposed to be a beautiful Indian summer type day on Sunday. However, I would recommend the following: A surprisingly authentic Mexican restaurant in Arena, WI called Del Sol is probably your best bet. Hit-or-miss American regional cuisine in Mazomanie at The Old Feed Mill. In Spring Green itself, good bar-type food and great pie at The Shed; an okay steakhouse/supper club called Arthur's.
