Dutch vs. French ovens
Is there a difference between the two? I noticed Le Creuset has French ovens, so is this their name for a Dutch oven?
These pieces of cookware evolved from heavy covered pots where the top was sufficiently concave to permit hot embers to be placed atop the vessel, so it cooked from all sides.
The oval ovens that LC offers are invaluable for certain cuts of meat (whole poultry; leg joints, et cet.) that are not circular in shape.
