Good ethnic BYOB restaurants on North Side, Rogers Park, Edgewater, etc.?

Three couples in Evanston, Wilmette and Northbrook want to get together for dinner a couple of times a months and explore differents ethnic cuisines: Asian/Far East, Mexican/Cuban/Latin, Middle Eastern, European, Indian/Pakistani - we're open to anything favs and hidden gems you know of. We want to stick with BYOB to check total down... Thanks for any suggestions and warnings, too.

    Here's another:

    Ethiopian Diamond
    6120 N. Broadway
    773-338-6100

It's not BYO, has a full bar, but prices prices are extremely reasonable. A fine place to go with 6 people, so you can try lots of dishes. Love their injera (the sourdough-ish bread you use to pick up bites of food). Service can be slow, but it's always friendly.

I thank everyone for all these promising suggestions - and especially Roger Spark for reminding me about Cafe Suron - which I'd somehow forgotten about. Can't imagine why since it's long been one of my very favorite spots. Good food, service and atmosphere. Can't wait to try it again. Thanks!

I can second Andalous, Thai Pastry and Dorado as all worth checking out. Dorado is the most upscale of these. In particular Thai Pastry stands out from so many just so-so Thai places in Chicago. My personal BYOB fave is Tango Sur, an Argentinian place on Southport-steak is the specialty. Empanadas are good as is the chimichurri sauce. Lines can be quite long at times and I don't believe they take reservations (not sure on that point).

Hama Matsu on Clark in Andersonville is a BYOB sushi place.

Riques Regional on Sheridan/Argyle is a BYOB Mexican place. There has been several remarks on it - I love it.

Check out the thread on the desperate chowhound bride... several mentions of affordable BYOB spots throughout the city.

Cafe Suron is a very nice Persian BYOB just east of Sheridan Road in Rogers Park. They offer an extensive selection of interesting appetizers (the dolmeh are great), and their Lamb and Beef are excellent. However, parking around there can be a problem. If you go into the restaurant and ask, they will usually park your car for you.

            Cafe Suron
            (773) 465-6500
            1146 W Pratt Blvd
            Chicago, IL 60626

Dorado in Ravenswood is a good "upscale" Mexican restaurant that prepares traditional Mexican dishes using French cooking techniques. It is BYOB (although I think they plan to get a liquor license).

            Dorado
            2301 W. Foster Ave.

Andalous Moroccan (Clark, north of Belmont) is good Moroccan BYOB.

Thai Pastry (4925 N. Broadway) - Excellent, authentic Thai food. It also has great Thai desserts (hense the name) which is really unusual. Not sure if its BYOB.

Old Jerusalem (Wells, a couple blocks south of North Ave) is good, cheap, Middle Eastern food. I'm not sure if its BYOB, but its certainly cheap enough that you don't have to worry about keeping the check down.

Everyone has their own favorite Indian or Pakistani Restaurant on Devon.
