Just HOW good are the pancakes at Shopsin's??

I am yearning for some delicious pancakes or french toast today, and I've heard that
Shopsin's makes some serious pancakes. I haven't been there in a few years, and I've
only had sandwiches and soups there.

Is it worth the trip? (From the East 20's.) :)

I was really UNDERwhelmed at Shopsin's. I prefer Kitchenette in Tribeca for all the breakfast stuff.

Shopsins is best for variety - but I've never had anything there that wasn't suitably toothsome. The pancakes were good - I don't know if I'd count them among the finest I've had but they were good.

The one time I tried going, they wouldn't let us in because they only had enough wait staff for the number of people they had in there and decided not to let anymore people in for the rest of the morning. I thought that was the weirdest thing. The next time we went, they decided to close on a Saturday. We figured we gave them too many chances and now will never go there.
As for Kitchenette, we live around the corner from the, but will not go there because they have such a bad health department report from their kitchen. I think they were one of the dirtiest kitchens in town.....no thanks.

What passes for quirkiness at this place is not justified by the food. I would avoid it.

Try Clinton St. Baking Company instead. Best pancakes ever, but be prepared for a ridiculous wait for weekend brunch. Just when we were about to give up, the hostess brought out a plate of silver dollar pancakes...mmm.
