Best freakin' tamale ever is in Iowa City @ La Reyna

I'm serious.

Following a tip on another thread here on the 'hound, I went to La Reyna yesterday for lunch. Wow.

The tamale dough was light and fluffy, and the filling flavorful and delicious. My chicken taco was truly traditional, with 2 tortillas (not just one) and the chicken meat was tender and obviously homemade (I was actually pleased to find a bone it - a good sign).

And the prices! Dirt cheap (tacos are a buck fifty!). They should raise their prices, but until they do, get in there and take advantage of the bargain.

La Reyna is mostly a really good bodega with some prepared food on the side, but they own the space next door and would like to put a restaurant in there, so stop in and support them so that they can have the capital to do it.

Forgot to mention that La Reyna in Columbus junctions is great, too! I'm looking forward to checking out the IC location. Thanks for the review! (Love Devotay, one of my all time faves.)

I think Carmen and Carlos are in Iowa City full-time now. Wish they'd open one in Cedar Rapids....

I believe the singular is "tamal", plural is "tamales".

La Reyna now has seating inside at their Iowa City store!! It only seats about 30 or so but it has a really cozy feel to it and, of course, the food is amazing....it's definitely a lot different than the other Mexican places in town, but it's a much welcomed change. Hope you guys can support it!

Correction: (South of IC on 218 about 20 mi to the Washington/Ainsworth exit, then EAST (RIGHT) on 92 for almost 10 miles)

I forgot it is a clover leaf exit!

Drive on 92 to Columbus Junction until you see a bar called the "92", take the angle road to the second stop sign, turn right and La Reyna will be on your left.

If you really want the full La Reyna experience, visit their original grocery/small restaurant location in Columbus Junction (South of IC on 218 about 20 mi to the Washington/Ainsworth exit, then EAST (left) for almost 10 miles) Their fajitas are the best in the business! We will drive from Solon just for the fresh cut salsa and to eat, then order a tub of salsa to take home! Dive atmosphere, order your coke in a glass bottles (from mexico), fun place to take friends who don't mind a little drive; on your way home grab a cone at the dairy treat just west of 218!

PS, nice to see restaurant owners suggesting other restaurants! the devotay is a great place!

              Another tip:

On weekends they have Barbacoa (BBQ) beef for their tacos & burritos. Awesome!

              Peace,

I love their steak tacos myself. When I was there last night she told me she would be moving inside when it got colder.

A plea to all those in the area: PLEASE oh PLEASE support La Reyna - best mexican food in town by far.

It's also a pretty good Tienda, by the way. Only one around I know of with a full service meat counter, and the widest selection I've seen this side of Chicago.

I live for their chicken tacos now.

Right On. I'd love to build the momentum for this place. KS
