Looking for Something Special
Looking to celebrate a big occasion and we both enjoy a great meal, great service and wonderful surroundings. I'm looking for something new perhaps, but well established (can't risk it). A few of our most favorite recent meals were @ Veritas, EMP, Tocqueville, Cru, Annisa, Babbo and WD-50.
Anyone have any ideas? A meal to remember? Budget isn't unlimited so no Per Se or Mas but otherwise please feel free to suggest anything. Up for any cuisine and any location in Manhattan. Thanks you all!!!

Ate at Alto 2 nights ago. It was very good, but given the plethora of great dining in NYC, I wouldn't return right away (but would eventually). Food is excellent and be prepared to be too full to finish the 4 course prix-fixe (and they said the portions were scaled down!). Menu had intereting choices (rabbit, sable, sweetbreads) along with the usual.
Sommelier and waiter were knowlegable and well-presented. I bring that up, because I was surprised at how frumpy most of the staff were. I expect all sensual areas to be covered when I fine dine. They don't have to be models, just look clean, hair brushed and put together.
The room is modern (back-lit glass walls with wine bottles), but tempered by serene lighting and upholstery. It is also not noisy. Oh - both desserts were big disappointments. -
I had a great meal at Hearth last week. It isn't quite as slick as most of the other places mentioned, but for what you're describing, it might be perfect. Their wine list, and I mean the actual LIST not just the wines themselves, by the way, is great (esp. their lengthy descriptions). Price isn't too bad either.
Must admit that I also do love Danube, too, for sexy high end.

Either of these 2 affiliated restaurants, Danube and Bouley, will suit your needs.
We tend to favor Danube for their innovative Austrian-inspired dishes, the unique ambiance and decor, and the interesting wines which includes good Austrian selection.

re: RCC
I was actually thinking about Bouley but have become hesitant. It's been around for ages and ages and we are a young couple (27-28) and I think she would prefer something "fresher." I'm sure the meal can't be beat but it seems like to easy of a choice to pick Bouley if that makes any sense. Thanks.

re: catzeem
I think I understand.
If you haven't been, Danube's ambiance, decor and food are fresher - think Gustav Klimt of "The Kiss" fame decorating the place. The Modern at MOMA, or even the Bar Room at the Modern, are definitely set-up to reflect the museums' mandate. I have seen, but not dined at the Modern. I have dined at the Bar Room and the furniture and layout is definitely on the MOMA style of things. Also, good Alsatian-inspired small plate cuisine at the Bar Room.

If you haven't been to Eleven Madison Park since Chef Daniel Humm took over the kitchen, it's a definite must! His French-inspired cuisine is sensational, service continues to be flawless, and the space is, of course, gorgeous!

Happy big occasion and Bon Appetit!

Oops! I skimmed your recent list too quickly and now see that you did include EMP. Glad we agree about it. :-)
Maybe Cafe Boulud? The cuisine is always superb; there's a fine wine list; service is cordial and polished; and the room is small with very attractive contemporary decor.

Or...
How about Alto, L'Impero's more upscale sibling? I haven't been to Alto yet, but my daughter had dinner there a few months ago and said it was excellent. (Of course, L'Impero, which I have been to, would be a fine choice as well.
