Minced White Fish for Gefilte Fish

I'm going to make Gefilte Fish for the first time for breaking the fast on Yom Kippur. Does anyone have a favourite place to get the fish in the Toronto area?

  1. Nortown foods usually has ready to go fresh fish mixtures. I prefer to use salmon minced in a food processor -- untraditional, but much more flavourful.

    1. Without a doubt City Fish on Dufferin. Tell them what you want (we call in advance and use mostly white fish), but not to grind it until you get there so it is not ground too smooth as a lot of places do. Of course, my mother used to chop her own fish in a wooden bowl with a Hack Messer.

        Thanks - I suppose it's not a problem to request the head and bones, etc. for the stock also?

      2. Just picked some freshly ground fish (combination of white fish & pike) at Bathurst & Steeles at the Food Basics fish counter. SObey's at Clark & Hilda also had beautiful ground fish. And all places had head & bones upon request.
