Some friends of mine who are Jamaican have taken me to Irie in Cypress. Expect absolutely no service except when you order at the counter, but cheap prices. Example: we had a salad, the dressing was a bottle of store-bought wishbone plopped down on the table. That just added to the charm in my book.
But it is some serious down-home Jamaican food. I've had their curried goat and oxtail and it always hit the spot. I've tried to but some pattys to take home, but they've been sold out.
Hmm. Not in Long Beach. Near the airport there is Derrick's on La Tijera, www.derricksjamaican.com. In Santa Monica there is Port Royal Cafe, www.usmenuguide.com/portroyalcafe.html, however, their hours are spotty. I've gone there to kill a patty craving three times and each time they were out.
