Donovan's Burger

guttergourmet Sep 18, 2006 01:18 AM

Well, after being a little disappointed in the Ben's Best pastrami sandwich, I went back for the Donovan's cheeseburger with fried onions. Definitely in the top 3 to 5 in the city.

Donovans Pub served me my first drink, I think it was a rum and coke, in 1969. It was a great joint serving great food back then, I am glad to hear that its still the same great joint.

What are some other food destinations to see in that area? (My last trip to Donovan's included a trip to the authentic Irish grocer a few blocks away.)

Also, has the place changed? Looks like a lot of different looking rooms have been connected to make the place. (Might be a sign of an expansion into another restaurant space.)

I usually get a baked potato instead of fries. Nothing to see there. But what a burger. Cheddar and fried onions.

I had fries at Donovans last week that were OUTSTANDING.

Went all the way from Manhattan. Burger and fries were A+. Worth the trip. Really. (Manhattanites take note.)

Skip the (food service, frozen) onion rings and the dry (too healthy) potato skins.

Quick question...is the burger as good in both places? Woodside and Bayside? Thanks!

I am off the wagon when I eat the Donovan Burger so I add on cheddar cheese and bacon to the burger-- so delicious. There's nothing better than animal by-products. I also agree with the fried onions. Ask for extra napkins. The burger is very juicy. The fries are mediocre.

I totally agree. Had one last night. I get it medium-rare, with cheddar and fried onions. I take about half the onions off. :)

Obviously not the best bun in the world (it ends up merging with the patty), but great flavor and the texture cannot be beat.

Not only one of the best, I agree, but a great bargain as well. Leaves room for a nice cold Guiness or two.

Guinness should never be had cold.

Is this Donovan's Pub in Woodside? If so, have you ever tried their prime rib? I haven't been there in many years, and my last recollection is of their prime rib. It was pretty good at that time. I would like to go back, even if it's just for the burger now.

Never got past the burger. I've been jonesing for prime rib though lately and am thinking about trying Keen's in Manhattan.
