What is the name and where are the new farmers markets in NYC started by the ex-greenmarket lady.

How are they? Worth visiting?

  1. I think they're called Real Food Market. The only one I've been to is the one on 6th Ave. at Downing St. It's open on Saturdays only, from 10 to 2. There were only 5 or 6 booths the one time I was there; one was Balthazar Bread, and one was Murray's cheese. I'd rather go to the fantastic Murray's main store only 2 blocks away. Also a couple of produce stands. I really don't see the point of this market with the Union Square Greenmarket being so close and having such a great variety of stuff (and having longer hours). Yes, I know that this new market allows vendors to sell stuff they didn't grow themselves, and stuff from farther afield, but it's not worth it for me.

      1. I live near the one at Petrosino Square, and it's really lame. Like the above poster mentioned, two of the tables are taken up by nearby bread and cheese merchants. And in fact, there are no fruit merchants there and there are very slim pickings on veggies. It's kind of a shame.

        1. but it's intended to be a market for value-added goods, right? so that would explain no fruit/veg vendors. i'm not defending it b/c i haven't been, but this was my understanding of it.
