Red Bank Farmers Market (NJ)

Just a quick note about the Red Bank Farmers Market (Galleria parking lot on Bridge St). I've been going there every Sunday. Here's what I liked from last week:

Hauser Hill Farms
- fresh eggs. They have large brown chicken eggs. Sometimes they have pheasant, pullet, or guinea eggs. Eggs are usually sold out by 10:30. I've been to the farm and seen how the fowl are keep in roomy outdoor pens.
- black-eyed peas in the hull
- really good nectarines. Peaches. These will be gone soon.
- okra
- green beans
- Apples!
- I haven't tried the cabbage, but it looks good.

E.R. and Sons (Farmer Ed)
EVERYTHING is good. He's been farming organically for many years and knows how to grow good food.
- grape tomatoes and heirloom tomatoes
- sweet potatoes - very good with pale yellow flesh
- scallions
- green beans
- corn is very tasty, but wormy. I don't mind the worms because I like it organically grown.
- When it gets cooler, look for chard, collards, kale, etc. Farmer Ed's are the best

Tasty Pantry (Elaine)
- Sweet pickled cabbage
- peach mango preserve
- plum preserve
- apple cake

The farmer perpendicular to Hauser Hill has good heirloom tomatoes -- cherokee and green-striped, sold in quart boxes. They also have delicious juicy Asian pears, also in boxes.

    1. The Red Bank Farmers Market is Sundays in the parking lot behind the Galleria at the corner of Bridge St and Front St. It starts about 9:00 and closes aroudn 1:30-2pm. It will run to the end of October and possibly into November.

Has anyone been this year so far? Anything special to look out for? I am going to try to head over there in a bit, I will report back later.

Here's what I got today. Market is open until about 1:30 pm.

Asparagus and radishes and strawberry/rubarb pie (all organically grown). Tammy and Bill's stand.

Strawberries and Peas: One grower has two varieties. He says he has enough to last the day. They are juicy, with a light flavor. He has very good green peas in the pod. He says he will have strawberries next week.

Farmer Ed (ER and Sons) has lots of beautiful organically-grown vegetables. Ed is very experienced and he grows the best stuff. Gorgeous large red and green butter-lettuce. Very good green salad mix. Arugula. Watercress! Radishes, scallions. Greens: mustard, mitzuna, collards.

FRESH eggs!!! At Hauser Hill. They also have lots of conventionally-grown vegetables.

      2. Was just there with my family as well.

In addition to the above I bought some fresh pickles and some lobster ravioli and crab cakes.

        Nice little market.

I wish the pickles were better. They're decent, but there are jarred pickles that I like better.
My favorite pickles are at the deli at Sickles Market. I think they're Gus pickles.
