My husband and I took out his grandma for lunch. She is American-Croatian, and wanted to do something of that area. We found a Balkan place around Times Square (not a perfect spot to begin with!!). The place served Bosnian food (not expensive, but not too cheap either). After having some pie as an appetizer, we all ordered some hot entrees. The food was served probably within 20 minutes, and was REALLY hot... except for the vegetables which came FROZEN cold. Grandma thought that it might have been the way they serve it there. We had strong doubts. After the dinner, grandma asked our waitress about the strange arrangement. The waitress said (with a rather strong accent and a very evident attitude) that the vegetables were apparently not for eating - they were there as a DECORATION!!!

Have you ever heard of anything like this?

The pie was with a kind of soft European cheese. It was actually pretty good. Unlike the rest of the food that we tried there. I think it's a pretty common kind of a pie.

Unless the vegetables looked like this, you shouldn't have to worry about if they were for decoration or not.

I would have told the server politely, "If it's a food item that's not meant to be eaten, don't bring it to my table. I hate being teased when I'm hungry.".

Pretty. but not - the vegetables didn't look anywhere close to a decoration. just your regular cauliflower and broccoli, and such.

I could see this image being mistaken as a decoration, but I can also understand someone eating it and mistaking it as say an "appetizer".
