Cafe Marliave - RIP?

Walked by today and bright orange signs on the windows say the building has been "seized" due to unpaid taxes, and there's a big padlock on the door.

I learned to love New England Chowder here so its a nostalgia trip for me. I am going to say that they won the Best Chowder in Boston in 1983, just before Legal Sea Food became HUGE and reverse engineered everyones taste buds.

Call me crazy, but I was a fan of this place. Yes, it was kinda dirty. But I loved the old-fashioned service (old men wearing black and white kind of thing). A real Boston relic.

I guess this place had its fans; I'll guess most of them are 70 years old at least. Given how sad, tired, and dirty it was on my visits (two over its last ten years), I'd call this a relic of the Very Bad Olde Days of Boston dining. RIP, Cafe Marliave, and please stay dead.

Well, it wasn't the greatest restaurant, but I know a lot of people who will be saddened by this news, as it was a very popular hangout for many folks over the years.

But I'm not really surprised. It didn't seem like a very clean place, and its location was pretty out of the way even though it was right behind Downtown Crossing.

That's what I was thinking. I thought it closed long ago. The last time I was there was when I was in high school ( and that was the early ( real early)70's!)
