Eleven Madison Park or Union Square Cafe?

Kanger Sep 14, 2006 02:01 PM

My friend has about $500 to expense for 3 people, and he's trying to decide between Eleven Madison Park and Union Square Cafe. Although I've only eaten at the latter, it seems like most people prefer the former. Any thoughts, 'hounders?

I've eaten in both, although not in USC recently.

11 Mad. Park is a fantastic place, with amazing, interesting food.

USC is fine, but nothing to write home about.

We had dinner at Eleven Madison last weekend and it was fantastic!

We both had the three-course prix fixe and two glasses of wine. Our total was around $235 before the gratuity.

They're very different restaurants (though I happen to like the upstairs seating at USC. We enjoy the privacy and have never had a problem with service either.)

I'll try to write a review soon.

BTW, people were dressed very informal. The only people slightly dressed up were those from my parents generation (early to mid 60's) or older.

EMP by FAR. Much more theatrical room; less risk of getting shoved in Siberia (i.e. upstairs at the USC)

I much prefer 11MadPark, that should be enough for tasting menu and wine for 3.

Although I haven't been to Eleven Madison Park since the chef switch, I would reserve there. Union Square Cafe makes well-prepared comfort food, but that's about it. I haven't had anything memorable or exciting there.

Eleven Madison Park. No question. Different leagues.

Although I've never been to USC, I would definitely pick Eleven Madison Park.
