NE DC: Near Brookland

I'm thinking of moving out of NorthWest to the less traveled (by me at least) NorthEast quadrant of DC near the Brookland metro station. But I really know nothing about the area other than the fact that there is a place for rent that looks perfect for me and my mate.

So I'm looking for any suggestions on places WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE of the metro. Generally I'd like advice on cheap and moderately priced places with good food and maybe a fancier place or two thrown in if they're worth it. Good pubs, bars and other dives would also be greatly appreciated.

And just to clarify, "within walking distance" should be within about a one mile radius, mile and a half tops.

Any cuisine/ ethnic style works for me except fast food chains.

Ellis Island is pretty decent. Kinda crowded on the weekend, but they have some decent specials.

One time I stopped by on a weeknight and the place was pretty deserted. The daily special was liver and onions. I guess they had a lot left around, or nobody was buying the stuff, because the chef loaded my plate down with about 6-inches of the stuff. I was eating it two days later.

Just graduated law school at Catholic, right there in Brookland. Hate to say it, but there is not very much there in the way of restaurants that are not fastfoody. Colonel Brooks is fine--pub/tavern food, but nothing fancy and nothing I wanted to eat highly frequently, but it is one of the only places I know of in walking distance. You might try taking the metro to Silver Spring, its close to there, and there are a lot of places there now. Or Chinatown, or U Street for more ethnic types of food. Sorry.

I haven't been in a while, but I always liked Colonel Brooks' Tavern in that neighborhood as a bar and restaurant.
