There are two Italian bakeries that I like in Monmouth County. I won't say they're excellent, but certainly good, with fresh, good quality and lots of variety. I don't know the name of either one... 1. In Matawan on Rt 34, in the strip mall next to Starbucks. 2. In Middletown on Rt 35 and New Monmouth Rd, in the strip mall with Sono Sushi. Last year, the Star-Ledger's Chowhound group named it the #2 dessert place that they tried in NJ. I don't recall for sure which place was #1, but it definitely wasn't Mendoker's. At The Dessert Plate, everything is made with REAL old-fashioned ingredients, and not the mixes that so many bakeries rely on nowadays. They also serve the best coffee in downtown Somerville, and the coffee is organic, fair-trade stuff. In addition to the assortment of fantastic scones, cookies, cakes and such that they make daily, they do custom work that reflects the fact that they are graphic designers as well as bakers. If you want the best (although it is not necessarily cheap), I strongly recommend The Dessert Plate. It is on Main Street, between Warren St. and Bridge St., across from The Historic Courthouse, and they are closed on Mondays.
