Saffron @ Costco

Went to the Costco on El Camino in South SF over the weekend and saw Spanish saffron for sale. $24 for an ounce jar. Seems like a pretty good deal.

  1. That is a good price. I recently bought some in Berkeley at Milan International on University Avenue - # 990 - for about the same price. They have smaller tins - 1 gram - and bigger ones as well. And of course the Spanish Table is also nearby but I don't think they'll have much in this price range ... but I could be wrong since I don't shop there very often.

Spanish Table charges $16 for four grams.

    2. Is the stuff at Costco saffron strands or powder? I am very suspicious that it's not the real (Crocus sativus) stuff. The fake dyed stuff is safflower, or Carthamus tinctorius.

Costco's pretty reliable as far as quality and value. I'd be shocked if they were doing that.

Nope, it's the real deal. My father just bought some & it's definitely legit.
