Coffee Crunch Cake

Cynsa Sep 11, 2006 11:36 PM

At a recent birthday celebration, the Birthday Cake was the Coffee Crunch Cake from
Yasukochi's Sweet Shop
1790 Sutter St. San Francisco
(in Japantown)
Phone: (415) 931-8165

- A tender yellow cake with layers of whipped cream topped off with sweet coffee crunch chunks...
I'd tasted it before and it was way TOO sweet...but this one was just right. In fact, it was perfectly delicious with its 1:1 ratio of whipped cream:cake.

...maybe it's even better than the Lemon Crunch or the Hawaiian Delight. What coffee crunch cake sources remain since the days of Blum's? Eastern Bakery on Grant Avenue? . ..this would be a sweet taste-off at the October picnic, ...anyone interested?

Schubert's on Clement has a Coffee Crunch Cake. I haven't tried it though. Link: http://www.schuberts-bakery.com/

Downtown Bakery in Healdsburg has made coffee crunch cake from time to time. Here's my post -

Eastern Bakery's version shows up at a lot of family parties, and it's a sad shadow of its former glory. I much prefer Yasukochi's and look forward to trying Schubert's.

I would also skip the coffee crunch cake from Eastern Bakery. The cake is fluffy and dry, the whipped cream tasted oily and artificial and the coffee crunch chunks are too large and hard. Yasukochi's is probably the best in SF.

Speaking of the picnic...is there going to be one this year? I haven't seen anything about it, but maybe I missed it?

It was posted at least once. The picnic is Saturday, October 7. There are still spots left:

          Hope you can make it!

Cynsa...if you think I'm going to schlep another coffee crunch cake half the size of San Francisco to the picnic...think again!!!......I weep thinking of it......however, I may go over to Japan town for lunch and pick up a small one.

FYI - Ernst Weil, Blum's employee and inventor of the Blum's Coffee Cake recently published a cookbook.

I just picked up this cookbook and I'm excited to try the recipes. I had the coffee crunch cake for the first time over the holidays from Sweet Stop (which uses the Blum's recipe) and it felt like I was in heaven.

Mr. Weil's book is absolutely delightful. For anyone who collects baking books, I think it's a must-have. Even my good friend who's a high-end pastry chef loves it.

Cool, please do post your findings on the Home Cooking board as you take the recipes for a spin.

Victoria Pastry Co in North Beach makes a ridiculously good coffee crunch cake... their princess cake is also out of this world.

Just to add to the list for anyone looking ... Lotta's Bakery on Polk makes the cake by special order. Haven't tried it though.
