Ground cherries in Manhattan?

JT123 Sep 11, 2006 05:49 PM

I am just back from Quebec City where I discovered the most amazing little fruit--ground cherries (cerises de terre) at the farmers market. These round, yellow, cherry tomato-like fruits were surrounded by paper husks (think tomatillo), but with the most remarkable sweet, smoky pineapple-like flavor. Is there anywhere to get these delectable treats in NYC? Perhaps at a greenmarket?

you can find them at the Greenmarket in Union Square. I've seen them in at least two vendor's booths (can remember the names, but one is definitly the stand with all the hot peppers, for about $3/ pint). I believe they are also called "husk cherry tomatoes"...They are amazing!
