Tacos Al Vapor

o
Ollie Sep 10, 2006 11:28 PM

Those of you who know what I'm talking about, and have had them, good tacos de cabeza, (beef head or tender goat head traditionally) or any other meat al vapor (steamed)pressure cooked. Any suggestions? Familiar with the tacohunt blog and others but no mention of tacos al vapor. With the vastness of taco truck heaven in L.A. there's gotta be some vendor who know's what they're doing, or are they just not around in L.A.? All help/suggestions appreciated.

You really need to troll Victory Boulevard from Vineland to Van Nuys, up Van Nuys to Vanowen, and back east to Vineland.

One of the better ones is at Fulton and Vanowen well after dark; another one parks around 5 PM in front of the Target on Victory and Vineland; there's one at Fulton and Victory a little later.

    All do tacos al vapor.

Which would you consider to be the best out of all of them?

Victory and Vineland... but maybe because I'm most familiar with it.

I think I might go tonight, really craving good "cabeza" or chivo. Uber, do ya know if they do either or both, and how are they?

Not sure... I don't eat chivo except in birria, and never bothered asking about cabeza. Sorry...!

Hey Ubergeek, I went searching for the truck on Vineland & Victory today around 7:30. Drove N-S-E-W and nothing. Man what a letdown. I didn't have time to go to the others U had mentioned. When was the last time U saw it there around 5pm?

A few weeks ago. I've been working split shifts lately (don't ask, it's a REAL pain) and so I haven't been on Victory at the right time. It's on Victory, though, about 100 feet west of Vineland.

Within the last week, though, the city has put up "anti-gridlock zone" signs on Victory from the Burbank border to Laurel Canyon, so I'm wondering if they weren't hounded from their location by Parking Enforcement.

Sorry you wasted your time... I'm not happy either, because it was totally reliable, unlike some taco trucks.

Let me know if U see it again, or if they have a new location in the vicinity. You got me all hyped up, now I wanna try.

This sucks. They're not there -- I went by at 17.30 today and it's ALWAYS been there, but all I saw was Lovely Rita Meter Maid arranging to have a Ford Escort towed off the lane.

Do U know if the other trucks U mentioned are still in "operation"?

Hey Uber, Went to the Vic/Vine taco truck 2 days ago. If it's the same one it's called "Tacozone". Anyway had 2 asada, one suadero, and one cabeza. For the most part, I respect your opinion, but these tacos were "just eh". If it's the same truck you were refering me to, was not at all impressed. I've definately had better.

The one I was talking about wasn't labelled, so either they painted it or it's a different one.

Sorry it was just 'eh'... there's so many of them, just keep trying!

There now seems to be two taco trucks at the Target at Victory and Vineland, one on victory and one on vineland. I believe the "eh" tacos refer to the one on victory. However, the truck on Vineland, called Tacos el Navegante, are AMAZING. hands down, best carne asada i've had! and the pastor's good too. AND they're open late. they're my new heaven.

I have not tried it, but there is sometimes a taco truck "al vapor" on Fletcher Drive right by the Foster's Freeze. Just East of the 5 freeway exit. (I think east...my sense of direction is rather poor.)

I like to try taco trucks; how does one know they would be 'al vapor'? Ask? or is there signage or some sign?

There's usually a sign, or you can ask -- "se asan los carnes? o son al vapor?"

If you're looking for great cabeza tacos, check out the taco truck that parks in the Nishikawa Auto Repair Shop lot on Fair Oaks Blvd. in Pasadena, just north of California, on the east side of the street. Awesome tender cabeza, great lengua too if you're into offal.

The name of the truck, btw, is El Taquito Mexicano #2 (the #2 refers to the name of the restaurant from which this truck originates and not the truck itself).

I'm not sure if they make their tacos al vapor or not, but they're the best tacos in town on most nights (and when they're not, Los Tacos across the street is ready to fill the gap).

The best cabeza for me is the thick chunky meaty kind. The best I've been served in L.A. is at Taqueria Estilo Mexico at the edge of Culver City, Washington and Centinella...

As for Lengua, for me that is a meat which must be braised. And is best under one of those hubcap 'grills' that can be found at Taco Tables such as the one on Venice and Vermont...

It's not a favorite style of mine, but I know what you are talking about. The Tacos at Pacos Tacos have that 'Al Vapor' style since they wrap them up in wax paper before serving them...

Hey Ubergeek, I tried your recommendation for T.A.V. @ the Vanowen & Fulton spot. It was ok, not what I expected, but not bad for $1 a piece. Wish the Victory & Vineland truck was still available. Keep me posted.

About a year ago, I knew of this truck @ Van Nuys & Laurel Cyn. in the run down strip mall on the NW corner who only sold Tacos de Cabeza, al vapor, really good. Don't know if he's still selling. If he's still there, someone please reply, before I make a "wild goose chase".

I visited this great taco table last night which does a great al vapor... It's on Boyle and 4th right by a 76 station (Don't park in the station however). Here's my post with some pictures!
