Uni Risotto Last Night

Last night I had the risotto with sea urchin roe special at Ca del Sole.

I just love uni sushi and I guess I was a little afraid of how cooked (or heated) uni would taste. But mmm, such a nice simple flavor it was and such a pleasure to eat!

I ordered a salad, too, just in case I didn't love my entree. The salad was delightful - but I knew that it would be since I've ordered that same salad about 25 times. It's the arugula and radicchio with a pungent "venetian" dressing which tastes to me of homemade mayo, mashed anchovy, garlic and lemon.

Anyway, the uni risotto tasted strongly of the ocean, in a good way. The first bite scared me a bit (the "bad" uni experience at a sushi bar being a horrible memory to lots of us uni eaters), and I have to say that cooked uni seems to be more aromatic than raw. But each bite swelled with that special uni wonderfulness, and by the end of the dish I was afraid to finish it because there would be No More Left.

What a pleasant surprise. And I wish I had some right now for breakfast.

(Ca del Sole is in North Hollywood/Universal City where Lankershim and Cahuenga meet)
