Any current info on Dawat?

  • 3

Am looking for an Indian rest. uptown. Can't find any input on Dawat beyond 2005. Is it still open? Is Chola a good alternative? Am looking for pleasant evironment and service.

  1. I just made this comment on another thread. I think Dawat is coasting on its reputation, and that the same owners' Cafe Spice (Village branch) is better. Chola is decidedly better, at least based on my recent lunch buffet experience.

I have to agree with it. Went yesterday and wrote a unhappy review on menupages today (though i did praise the decor...). It's a little ridiculous that they have the Jaffrey woman picture/book all over the restaurant, but I doubt she even goes there.
It was like eating hotel food - everything looks good. Setting looks good - but then you eat it, and then fail to be inspired.

    2. Haven't been to dawat for a long time although I recall a (leg?) lamb dish that was so large and great that i have long regretted not being able to finish (probably because of the dozen terrific appetizers and breads I had before it. Chola I've been to many times and recently. The buffet is the best of the buffets but a la carte is fantastic. Try the lamb vindaloo. Chola is more Goan (Portuguese influenced region of India)than the some of the other Indian restaurants around town. So if you like spicy heat you'll love it.
