we will be hitting the wineries tomorrow and would like to have dinner/supper on the way back. last year we ate in at Mirabele's and this year we want to eat at a less fancy place. ethnic is preferred but all suggestions are appreciated.

You could try Mosaic, also in St. James but less expensive than Mirabelle. The owners used to work at Mirabelle and are putting out some innovative stuff for the island.

Or how about Kitchen A Bistro? It's always been reliable though you might have a hard time getting a table on such short notice.

Ethnic - Thai Gourmet on Rte. 347, Port Jeff Station. Excellent Thai, reasonable prices, usually jammed, but if you're early you'll have no problem. Great Pad thai and massaman/green curries. Cash only.

Korean: Sil La Joung on Jericho Tpke in Commack. Quite good, but definitely toned down for the suburban palate. Don't let them talk you into something that "Americans like" and tell them you want what Koreans like. You may or may not get it.
