Asheville - Sante Wine Bar

A new wine bar opened in Asheville last week. It is called Sante and is at the end of the Grove Arcade by the old Battery Park hotel. They have a nice selection of wines by the glass (about 6-7 choices each of red, white and sparkling) and you can also buy by the bottle. In addition they have a menu of light foods to accompany the wines (cheese plates, olives , tapenade and other dips). I had a couple of nice reds last Wed. evening for about $7 a glass and a order of the tapenade that was more than enough for two people (with crackers and sliced baguettes) for only $5. The atmosphere inside is nice and there are also some tables available outside on the patio. This is a great new addition to the Asheville wine scene.

  1. Thanks for the review. Sounds like a nice place for a quick bite and a glass of vino. I also recently went to the newly relocated Old Europe and was very impressed with how they had renovated the space...very, well, European! (Haven't tried the food yet, though.)

Things really seem to be looking up for Asheville's cafe/bar scene.

Speaking of which, does anyone know when the two new Hector Diaz restaurants are supposed to open in the Grove Arcade?

if i recall correctly, modesto should be open very soon (within a month, i think). don't know about the other.

TWO new? What else is coming besides Modesto, the pizza place?

BTW, they told me Modesto would open in August when I called months ago. So much for that. We are hoping to eat there by Christmas!

The only thing I know for sure about the other Diaz place is that it was described in the Asheville Citizen-Times as a Mexican-themed restaurant. How that makes it different from Salsa I can't at this point say.

Here's the Mountain Express scoop on the OTHER Diaz place: "Hector Diaz strikes again! The unstoppable force that is Diaz is planning to open yet another restaurant – this one in the Grove Arcade. Yes, we've already heard of Modesto, another Diaz establishment slated to open in the Arcade in September. But now he's also planning a Mexican restaurant/tequila bar in the space formerly occupied by Oliver and Annabelle's."

woo hoo! Thanks for the scoop. (remember, Salsa is Carribbean, not Mexican, so I guess that would be the difference)

Speaking of woodfired pizza, I hear that Flat Rock Village Bakery will open a pizza place in Hendersonville. Another woo hoo!

Where did Old Europe relocate to? I love stopping there every time I visit Asheville.

Corner of Walnut and Lexington, beside the now-defunct T.S. Morrison's general store.

Yes, it is a very see and be seen type of spot. It used to be an antique shop and always had this sort of neat set back patio area which Old Europe has put to good use with table and chairs.

Modesto opens Tuesday. Tuesday, the tenth of October, year two thousand and six.

May your dining experience be satisfying and peaceful.
