best mezze in nyc

my brother, an out of town chef, is visiting and wanted me to recommend the best places for middle eastern small plates. any suggestions? manhattan, queens, or brooklyn. even close by jersey. unlikely to go to the bronx.

  1. tanoreen, on 3rd Ave in Bay Ridge, has very good mezes.

Im still waiting to try their cauliflower with pom molasses sauce which I have heard is wonderful.

    1. Turkish Kitchen, on 3rd Av., b/t 27th & 28th Sts. (Man.), has a wonderful variety of hot and cold mezzes. Add an excellent sherpherd's salad, and you have the makings of a delicious meal.

      1. Sahara Restaurant on Coney Island Ave in Brooklyn is my go-to place for meze. The cold appetizer platter and the shepard salad is always impressive. The chicken and lamb kebobs are above average as well. Its a bit of a hike from Manhattan but its worth it. We like Tanoreen too-it is definitely a bit more upscale but Sahara is an experience not to miss.

        1. I would vote for Zenon Taverna (34-10 31st Ave b/t 34th & 35th Sts) in Astoria. Very close to the Broadway stop on the N/W.
This is Cypriot cuisine. I take anyone visting from out of town here. They offer three different type of meze meals: Cyprus (meat), fish, and veg. My favorite dish is the sheftalia (pork meatballs.) I'd also get a bottle of retsina.
