Best place for dinner in/around Oakland?

A NYC chowhounder here, I'm meeting up with some old friends in Oakland and I'd like to get some recommendations on the best places to go. Thanks!

I think the kind of upscale Mexican they do at Dona Tomas and Tamarindo is more available in NYC than the great traditional stuff you'll find in the Fruitvale district. I recommend El Huarache Azteca.

Also on the upscale Mexican front, I enjoy Dona Tomas on Telegraph (right next door to Pizzaiolo). It's great for a group, and has nice seating outside as well.

I second the suggestion for Dona Tomas! Aside from great food and patio seating, the drinks are very good quality and the atmosphere is fun for socializing.

When my relatives from NY visit, they almost always beg for great Mexican food, which I guess is still harder to find in NY. For a particularly tasty, somewhat upscale take on Mexican, you may want to try Tamarindo Antojeria, in the Old Oakland area.

Anything particular you have in mind besides great food?

          Oliveto
          Pizzaiolo
          Dopo

Second Pizzaiolo. Easy to call and get a table at the last minute. They take ressies between 315 and 415.
            Dopo is closed for remodeling.
