Special Birthday: Tasting Menu & Vegetarian Tasting Menu?

Looking for somewhere wonderful for my wife's birthday. We've gone to Gramercy Tavern for the past couple of years and enjoyed it very much. I'm a vegetarian, so we would like something with a vegetarian tasting menu. In addition to the food, service (especially lack of "attitude") is very important.

Daniel is a possibility, although we had a bad experience at Cafe Boulud a while back. Aureole? GT again? I don't really have the energy to try to get a reservation at Per Se. Something else?

try devi...if you like indian food they have a great veggie tasting menu, i believe its $70 a person and $90 if you have wine pairings. i loved all of the dishes they served...especially the dessert!

Hangawi - Korean vegetarian restaurant. Special place. Not sure if there's a tasting menu, but there are 2 prixe fixe menus. Never thought I'd love a veggie dinner as much as an omnivorous meal. http://www.hangawirestaurant.com/

I know people think Hangawi is great but I have not been wowed. I have had many better meals of this type of cuisine (not in NYC though).

If you want to stick to mainstream, I vote Daniel. Write off your Cafe Boulud experience as a fluke. All his restaurants are excellent, but I would agree that Cafe Boulud ranks the lowest. Daniel will not disappoint. I have had some of the vegetarian dishes there (not the vegetarian tasting menu) and loved them all.

It's been a few years now, but I had dinner w/my family and vegetarian sister at Aureole, and we all (picky sister included) had a great experience.

we are big meat eaters but we thoroughly enjoyed the vegetarian tasting menu at Aureole a few months ago (we did it for a change of pace).

Just to clarify, my wife is not a vegetarian and usually prefers a non-vegetarian meal.

Thanks for the replies so far.

Any comparisons of Daniel and Aureole in terms of food and service?

I went to Daniel and my fiancee had the vegetarian tasting menu and I had the 'normal' tasting menu. Very accomodating, lovely space, impeccable service with probably the best tasting food I have ever eaten. My fiancee loved all her veggie dishes as well.
