Hi, we'll be staying in the Danvers area and have tickets to the 4pm Corteo show at Suffolk Downs in late September. We are looking for a restaurant in the area or headed back to Danvers. Probably something with a general menu or seafood would be good. Maybe Italian. We'd like something with entrees under $25. Thanks.

Try Zafferano. It's very close to the track, and serves excellent Italian (great pastas and grilled meats in particular, with a decent selection of seafood as well).

Many, many thanks for the recommendation. Zafferano's was voted the very best Italian restaurant the four of us have ever been to. The service was excellent, gracious and friendly. Our "waitress" was also the owner and we felt welcomed to the restaurant. Our meal started off with the antipasto for two (shared by 4) and mushroom risotto. The grilled eggplant and zucchini on the antipasto was heavenly, obviously marinated before grilling. Two of us ordered one of the evening's specials: grilled shrimp with asparagus and artichoke hearts. The shrimp was flavorful and cooked perfectly. My friend said she has never had such tasty grilled shrimp (and she's a world travelor). My other two friends each ordered a veal dish. The sauces were excellent and the veal was well tenderized. Just when you didn't think it could get any better we shared two desserts and three of us slowly sipped chilled lemoncello. The owner said she made the desserts herself. One was a raspberry tart. The other was an Italian dessert with a pie-like crust, layer of chocolate and dark cherries topped with a vanilla flavored cheesecake-like layer. (Sorry, I can't remember the name of it). The crust is thick, almost like a not very sweet shortbread.
Coming from Suffolk Downs, Zafferano's is at the intersection just past the Orient Heights T station. Park on the street or in the bank parkling lot. We were really surprised this restaurant wasn't packed with people waiting outside. We understand it has been open for two years.
We decided to have lunch on Sunday at Famous Dave's BBQ on Rt 1. It was a major disappointment after meals in Salem at Red's and Passage to India and Saturday evening at Zafferano's. It was my fault because a friend has been raving about this chain but I should have known better. This was the first time I have used Chowhound to choose restaurants for our annual weekend trip but my friends have already told me to start getting recommendations for our 2007 trip. They were VERY happy with the Chowhound choices.

Zafferano is a great rec; it's a nice-looking place, reasonable for its high quality. I'd also suggest the nearby Carmen's Kitchen. It's more casual and less authentic -- more Italian-American -- than Zafferano. Friendly, with big portions: I really liked the pair of giant meatballs on paparadelle here.
