German Resturant in or around Downtown LA

Good Evening everyone,

I am going to be visiting Los Angeles in Nov. and am looking for a German Resturant. I am staying at the Omni, and the convention is at the Convention Center so if you know some place great please let me know.

Those are the two and they are very different. Red Lion is more hipster, but with great dishes (smoked pork shank that is fabulous, while Lowenbrau Keller is more old fashioned, but with lots and lots of food on the plate. For my money, the Red Lion is more of a destination.

Funny you should call the Red Lion hipster. While it's certainly gotten that way, when my college roommate and I frequented the place (sometime in the '80s, that's all you're getting out of me:)), it was anything but. We liked it because of the "old Germans hanging out and talking about the homeland" vibe. That and the leberkase mit ei, and the Dortmund Ritter Brau on tap.

Hmmm, wonder if Karl and I started that hipster rep. :)

I'd suggest the Lowenbrau Keller at 3211 Beverly Blvd. over the Red Lion. The food, atmosphere and parking are better, the staff much friendlier (Red Lion bar wenches have a deserved rep for surly attitudes) and legend says Elvis was a fan.

The Red Lion on Glendale Blvd. is probably the best German place that's close to downtown.
