Rome restaurants near central station/Piazza della Republica

Hi fellow chowhounds. I'm new to chowhound so be gentle! I've found recommendations for restaurants from the board in other areas of Rome, but we will be staying just north east of the Central Station and I know there will be some nights we just want to eat close to the hotel. We like local trattoria-type restaurants. Any ideas? thank you

  1. does "northeast" mean the San Lorenzo/University district or simply the streets north of the station?
Remember that every busline in Rome, and tramlines too,as well as the Metro converge on that neighborhood so you can jump on and off in other neighborhoods in minutes.

thanks - we will be about 4 blocks northeast of the front of the termini, near Piazza Indepenzia. After touring all day, we are sometimes just too tired to take a bus or metro anywhere.

    2. Near termini I really like Montecaruso on Via Farini 12 (06 483549) although it maybe a little more than a trattoria. However fantasic orecchietti (they are from basilicata), and profiteroles. Its kind of on the Santa Maria Maggiore side of Termini. Also not a trattoria, but you might also check out trimani wine bar which is near the train station. You can have a glass of wine or eat there. Via Goito 20.

      1. There used to be a rather typical trattoria called Gemma alla Lupa at Via Marghera, 39 right outside of Termini. I don't know if it's still there. Nothing spectacular, but reliable.

        1. trattoria monti - Via di San Vito 13, Rome, Italy Phone: 06/4466573 (really good family place not far from termini!
          you should try:
          tortino verza e patate
          tortino ai carciofi
          tortino al radicchio
tortino di cipolle rosse (or every tortino they make...)
          excellent baccalĂ
          excellent meat
anyway always go with the specials...
