Edible Rhinestones and Rock Candy Growth

Does anyone have any suggestions for what I can use as edible rhinestones to decorate a cake? A google search brought up nothing but dragees and some sort of shimmery dusting powder, but I was thinking that broken up pieces of rock candy would work quite nicely. What are your thoughts, and how likely do you think it is that the integrity of the rock candy will be if I try to crush it into smaller chunks?

Along those lines, has anyone tried to grow rock candy before? Does it come out nice and shiny/sparkly? Could I add some sort of shimmer powder to the mixture before the candy grows? I know that you can add various colorings/flavorings to it and still "grow" the candy successfully but I'm not sure if adding solid objects like shimmer would prevent the proper chemical reactions from occuring. Thanks in advance!

  1. my one attempt was for a school science fair when i was eight years old--it ended up clumpy and goopy and not at all "nice and shiny/sparkly." my sense (then, and i haven't retried since) was that it was harder than it sounded to get a nice end product
