What can you do with licorice root? I'm not that interested in making desserts. It seems like there must be a way to cook main dishes with it, I'm thinking especially poultry. Anyone have experience with this? Any success or failure stories?

No. Not that I think I'm likely to come up with incredibly different flavor from using licorice root, but I'd like to give it a try. They are definitely two different plants, though.

I have a jar of licorice root that I bought in France - b/c I'd never seen it before - and have never used it. I'll dig around my cookbooks and see if I can come up with anything.

I found a really interesting idea from Heston Blumenthal in this article:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/weekend/story/0,,1013916,00.html
He claims that liquorice goes very well with asparagus, and suggests a recipe for "Liquorice jelly" which he coats salmon fillets with and serves it with asparagus & pink grapefruit. Of course, if you have heard of Heston Blumenthal you will know he tends to make things that might seem a bit... wierd... to many people at least, but if you are pretty open to new flavours & ideas then it might be worth a try!

I like the idea of savoury liquorice dishes!
