Ultra Supper Club - Review
On Saturday night, we were 4 at USC.
I did not pick the place, as I try to avoid "hip" places because, usually, I find the food to be lacking. In this case, my rule of thumb was wrong.
Scallop appetizer with beluga caviar in a citrus sauce was great. The scallops were cooked perfectly; not rubbery and overcooked which can happen in a matter of seconds. My main course was lamb loin and lamb sausage, with interesting eastern flavours. The lamb was delicious; as were the sides.
Desserts were quite good; I had the chocolate trio which featured an "ice cream sandwich", chocolate/espresso pot de creme, and a rich chocolate layer cake. Very chocolatey indeed.
The presentation and taste was topnotch.
We did not have wine, because, frankly, the food served there does not lend itself very well to wines mostly because of the heavy Asian influence on the food. My lamb dish, for example, had green curry and middle-eastern flavours in it. My wine-pariting abilities are not that good yet.
But, the place does boast some very fine wines. As one walks to the washroom (through the crowd of cougars, hipsters and posers and such) one sees a display of bottles of Dominus, Shafers, Tignanellos, and other big labels. Did I see a Screaming Eagle too?
There are two significant problems with this place: the noise level (think throbbing techno-beats) is intolerable. Second, the prices are too high.
