I'm going with ugly for sure... that first pictures looks like rotting intestines or something!

Your ground might be too rocky to grow carrots. If, during the growing process, the carrots hit gravel or rocks they won't grow straight and end up curving and wrapping around each other. I don't think that is how this particular variety is supposed to look.

I know--but they were worth it for the funky photos! (There was some gravel in this bed--never thought of that.)

My experience with growing carrots is very limited--aren't they more of a cold weather "crop"?

Yeah! I was going to say underworked soil too.

Listen, the photos are striking. But you can have unusual carrots and edible (and *cleanable*) ones too. Dig your soil down at least 12-14". Because your soil looks rocky or gravelly, sift it and add sand so you have a loose, even mix.

Plant your seeds in the spring and fall. Plant a few inches of your row every 2 weeks. You'll get progressive harvests of long, straight red or puple or yellow carrots to be proud of.

Alternatively, get a half whiskey barrel and fill it with potting soil and sand and you can grow them in any sunny spot with ease.

          Er...they have a great personality?

Let me know how you like them. I bought purple carrots on a whim once, but didn't like the flavor much. I don't know if there was an actual difference or I imagined one because I didn't like the color they turned after cooking.

            Yes, very good personalities!

They taste like ordinary carrots. Below is a photo of their interior:

Mine were red all the way through, and I could swear they tasted a little sweeter and were harder to cook than regular carrots. Maybe they were a slightly different variety than yours.

I have to agree with Kim Shook - those are truly disturbing. That first one looks like a purple praying mantis eating its mate. :-)

But your food photos are really incredible - love checking out your gorgeous produce, so keep posting them!

I would say beautiful AND ugly, but I'm a little odd. You should see my taste in men (present one excepted).

That's quite some carrots. However, apperance can be deceiving. The inside of the carrot sure looks good. Keep the picture coming!!!

I find it hard to believe they aren't sausages.

I thought the first picture was of a wacky New England lobster!

From the outside, those are carrots that only Bunnicula would love, but the inside shot, with that little ring of colour, that would make for some really fun presentation options. I'd like to think that I'd definitely try something funky like that (regardless of soil issues), but I'm not sure I'd buy produce that looked like that from the market, a little intimidating.
