My family recently moved to LA and I have to plan my son's bar mitzvah. I don't even know where to start. I would like some suggestions for fun restaurants I could call that would have space for private events and possibly room for a DJ and dancing--maybe to accommodate about 150 guests. Not too fancy--more fun than fancy is preferred. Thanks in advance!

I would start by checking out Here Comes The Guide, a wedding website and book. It covers almost every restaurant and event space in Southern California. Also, opentable.com may be helpful too.

As far as specific restaurants, you may want to look into Duke's in Malibu. It's right on the water, "fun", and can accommodate 150 guests.

You say "more fun than fancy", and I know that Hard Rock Cafe (at the Beverly Center) has done many bar mitzvahs, and that is a very fun place!

Not sure where you are but, give this place a try:

My girlfriend used this for her son's B.M. and it was great. She had music, dancing, food and drink bar. They have a private party room that is separate from the club. Ample parking and easy to find. :)KQ

Thanks for all your help. I went to see the space at Maggiano's at the Farmers Market which was very nice. Hard Rock Beverly Center is closing at the end of this year so that is out, although several people told me they do a fun party. I appreciate all your suggestions--keep them coming!

Well in my day, a bar mitzvah wasn't a bar mitzvah unless it was held at Sportsman's Lodge...

You didn't specify an area or cost, but here goes:
The House of Blues does rent out for parties - I can't think of a hipper place than that, plus the food is surprisingly good (although I would imagine ribs wouldn't be on the Bar Mitzvah menu...). Best coffee I've ever had.

The Racquet Club on Forest Lawn near Barham could be another option.

The 94th Aero Squadron (I think that's the name) by Van Nuys Airport also does weddings (and I would imagine Bar Mitzvah's).

A few years ago we went to a fab Xmas party at the top of Renaissance Hotel on Highland & Hollywood Bl. that was catered by Wolfgang Puck.

You might want to check with Canter's and see if you can reserve the Kibbutz Room. Cheesy and way cool at the same time.
