Zalek's Review AGAIN...YUM!!!

Went to Zalek's (Wakefield) with a friend for lunch today. My only disappointment was that my stomach wasn't large enough to eat two entrees because on the special board they had king crab legs for $13.95 but I opted for the greek plate...FANTASTIC and a great value. It contained warmed stuffed grape leaves (great touch!), large greek salad and a gyro that was great. DC had fish and chips and the portion of haddock was great and the batter was light and perfectly DC is a MAJOR foodie who has traveled the world and he thought they were the best he's had since England (where he is from!). Owners are delightful, this place ROCKS!!!

  1. I love that you keep mentioning this place - because I forget, and I'm really looking forward to it when I visit my parents in that area.

I think it's the same owners that YumYum mentioned a long time ago as a great cheesesteak place and missed when they left Somerville.

Thanks again - it's one of those CH places that have been able to expand - and (living in Boston proper) I forget until it's mentioned again.

    1. I've been to Zalek's a few times, and it's always packed. Unfortunately my review is less than stellar. The food was decent (I've had the greek plate and the lobster club) and though the food was good it took forever (at least half an hour the last two times I've gone) to get food. I don't know if I've just been unlucky or what. Has anyone else had this problem?

On a related question, how are their roast beef sandwiches?

      1. Hi Ladyscale. I haven't had the roast beef. I did have a similar experience the second time I was there which was a Sat. night. I talked to Peter (owner) yesterday and he said that he had been short a cook that night. As with any new restaurant, I think they are having spurts of rushes and then dead periods (yesterday for lunch it was very quiet around 12:30). I am hoping that they will be able to adjust because I realize that everything is cooked to order. Their quality is excellent as is the price point...I am hoping that they will rise up to the demand as word gets out and they are busier. They said that people in Wakefield are slow to notice they are even there!!

        1. We ususally go on Friday about 6p. Never crowded then and have not had to wait more than 10 or 15 minutes. Would happily wait longer though as the food is so worth it.

          1. As a result of this post I went to Zaleks for lunch yesterday and ordered their special ($8.95)- Greek sausage, roasted pepper stuffed w/ feta, served over white rice and Greek salad. The sausage and pepper were fire grilled/roasted. Initially I was miffed by the 20 minute wait. The place was pretty empty however there were a steady stream of take-out arrivals and phone orders. My first bite and my minor frustration melted away. To quote 4chowpups...YUM.

As far as portion size, lets just say I'm having the leftovers for lunch today. The grilled sausage had a wonderful, almost aromatic flavor (does that make any sense?) The roasted pepper stuffed with feta was so simple, but fantastic and there was no skimping on the feta in the salad. The rice was plain white, but nice and fluffy. All the sandwhiches looked very good and the roast beef sandwhiches appeared wonderfully rare. Prices are very reasonable. I'll making this a stop on my lunch rotation.

            Thanks all for the tip.
