Mayday--need a super-chowhound's help here...
Need a place for a birthday dinner tonight, needs to be west of 5th ave. AND between 17th st. and 35th st. Need it to have a lot of seafood--- but not sushi-- and not too expensive (avg entree around 22 or so).
any ideas..I'm running out of time..
thanks guys!! really getting down to the wire :)
I just don't think blt fish shack's food is going to be good enough, but I'm willing to consider causal places if the food is top notch

thanks RGR!! gascogne looks wonderful, unfortunately I am dealing with a very picky person. he refuses to eat anywhere that serves fois gras because of the inhumane way that it is obtained, but he will eat at places that serve meat.. go figure. gascogne features fois gras very promeninently unfortunately. oh well looks like we are going with blt fish shack.
thanks everybody!!!

One would expect a restaurant that's offering the cuisine of the Gascony region of France to feature foie gras quite prominently because it is a major food of that region.
I've avoided going to the BLT Fish Shack because I've read too many disappointing reports about it on this and other food forums. If you did end up there, hopefully, you had one of the better experiences.

Gascogne, the French bistro, on 8th, b/t 17th & 18th Sts., has only two fish main course dishes on the menu, but one of them is salmon. I've had salmon there several times, and it has always been delicious. Presuming the rest of your party is into things other than fish, there are lots of other excellent choices. The weather does not look too conducive to sitting in their lovely garden, but the interior space is thoroughly charming.

thanks lucia. we actually really like the suenos menu - great find, we'll try for next time. but the birthday dinner is actually my boyfriend's dad's birthday and he eats mexican food all the time at home and is sick of it, he would throw a fit if we took him there, forgot to mention that before.
thanks so much though, we'll definitely try that one another time. but the quest for tonight continues. we may have to stick with blt-fish-shack (sigh) :)

thanks native new yorker. red cat looks great, but it's about 10 percent priceier than we'd like which is fine. but they only have three fish dishes skatewing, char, and bass, and my boyfriend only like tuna and salmon , but he does not like sushi. aghhhh this is a tough one.. thanks so much, if you think of something else..give me a shout.
shaffer's is perfect for me. but my boyfriend doesn't want to pay 26 for salmon when the portion looks very small in the photo on their site. -
