Purchasing Sushi Grade Fish

CTCajun Aug 25, 2006 10:39 PM

It seems to me from the searching Ive done that Union Square Market is the place. I was wondering if anybody has had any experience with the fish from there. Or, if there is another place that is recommended. I will probably only be purchasing tuna and maybe some yellowtail (as far as fish goes) and probably would not fare to well in Chinatown. So, any help would be appreicated. Thanks. I am located on the UWS but travelling anywhere in Manhattan would not be a problem for good fish!

I go to Mitsuwa in Edgewater, NJ. There’s a shuttle bus service to Mitsuwa from Port Authority:

I also buy fish for sushi from Citarella. They carry very nice bluefin tuna and yellowtail.

I have had incredibly fresh fish at the USQ market, but not tuna.

Actually the fish guy that's there on Saturdays has excellent tuna and usually tuna belly as well. You just need to get there very early. When he has it, the tuna belly is usually sold out by the official market opening time of 8am.

Do you eat the fish from USQ Market Raw? I thought the tuna has to be frozen at some point to kill the paresites.

Have you tried Jake's Fish Market on the UWS? Pricey, but great.
          On Broadway around 89th/90th sts.
