Pie in the Sky - Rock Creek Lakes Resort

Our annual trek over to the Eastern Sierra gives us another chance to have some pie at Rock Creek Lakes Resort. A spectacular drive up Rock Creek brings you to this little kitchen/counter where pie fans find their way to .... they often sell out of pie by the early to mid afternoon. We found this out the hard way after a nice afternoon hike. So, we came back for breakfast and enjoyed some of the best buttermilk pancakes I've had in a long time. Then we had pie....I had the fresh nectarine - the essence of summer. I think it's done where they just cook the fruit enough to bind the juices and put it into a baked shell. This way the fruit is just cooked enough to not taste raw but it's not reduced to a mush either. They usually have 7-10 varieties of pie. Open for breakfast at 7am, I think, and the pies are available soon thereafter in a steady stream - made daily.

The resort is currently for sale but one of the prospective buyers is a baker and it looks good for the continued pie tradition that has been going on since the 1940's (?) - a long time in any event.

  1. I enjoyed their blackberry pie last summer, stopping during a hike at Chicken Foot Lake on the way up to Morgan Pass and Gem Lakes - all was spectacular. The pie slice was the perfect mid-hike boost to later get all the way up to 8000 plus feet at the Pass.

We got their a bit too early (around 9am) and they did not have the full choices of pies baked at that time, but the blackberry was good enough and I look forward to returning there again in a few weeks.

Hope the new owners keep of the tradition. Thanks for your report.
