Kashmiri dal recipe? Can't seem to find it....

Hello -

Visited Bangalore last year for a few months and I loved going to a restaurant at served an amzing dal dish. I was told it was Kashmiri cuisine. They were black, and almost smoky and very creamy. Absolutely my favorite dish while I was there. Does anyone know where you can find a recipe for this? I have a couple of Indian cookbooks (including a couple I picked up while I was there), but this particular dish escapes me.

  1. I found a recipe for Kashmiri chicken in my 'Simply Indian' book. I'll transcribe it; maybe you can do some subbing if it sounds right (or, heck, make it with the chicken; it sounds good)


    2 lbs whole chicken
    2 tbsp fried onions
    2-3 green chilies
    3 tomatoes
    1 tsp garlic paste
    1 tsp ginger paste
    3 tbsp fresh lemon juice
    1.5 tsp curry powder
    1 tsp red chili powder
    2 tbsp garam masala
    2 tbsp coconut (desiccated and unsweetened)
    1 tsp salt
    1/2 tsp haldi (tumeric)
    1/4 cup yogurt
    1/4 cup chopped parsley (for sprinkling)


    1. Heat oven to 375F (190C)

    2. Wash and cut chicken into 8 pieces and put into a baking pan.

    3. Blend the fried onions, green chilies, tomatoes, garilc paste, ginger paste, fresh lemon juice, curry powder, red chili powder, garam masala, coconut, salt and turmeric in a food processor, then add the vegetable oil and turmeric.

    4. Pour the mixture over the chicken pieces.

    5. Bake for approximately 40 minutes.

    Serve with fried potatoes on a bed of yellow rice sprinkled with parsley.

    1. I found this recipe which seems to fit your description, although they say it's a Punjabi recipe. Sounds good to me-I may try it myself!
