Newark NJ - bars?

Anyone know any good, casual bars/pubs in Newark, close to Penn Station preferred. Thanks!

  1. McGovern's Tavern, on New Street, off Broad.

    1. McGovern's is a great old style authentic Irish Pub. They really know how to pour a pint of Guinness. 27 Mix at 27 Halsey Street is just around the corner (sort of) from McGovern's and is a great watering hole for the younger and not so young crowd.

While I agree with both of these recs, they're not THAT close to Penn Station. If you want walkable spots, there are a couple of options in the Ironbound, which sits right behind penn Station. There's Mompou (tapas--less than a block behind Penn on Ferry Street), Adega Grill has separate bar, restaurant AND lounge, depending on the vibe you're looking for, and it's about 6 blocks down Ferry...

      2. Hell's Kitchen Lounge

I know it looks like a strip club but it is perfectly pleasant inside. I think it is going more for a Betty Page 50's decor. I don't know what the food is like but they do serve it. And it is across from the train.
