Best Japanese Restaurant in Japantown (other than Kiss)?

my fiance's sister is visiting for a few days. She spent a few years in Japan so she is pretty well versed in Japanese food. I'm guessing we can't get into Kiss on such short notice, so any other ideas?

I've never been to Kiss, but it has received good reports on Chowhound. Unfortunately, there aren't that many good Japanese restaurants in Japantown. The best is probably Kappa, and if your fiance's sister can speak Japanese, that will be most helpful there. It's above the Denny's at 1700 Post St and is quite expensive, but authentic. I've also heard good things about Ino Sushi. Maki and Kansai are also fairly good. Bushi-tei has had some good notices but I think it might be more of a fusion place. Here are some links:

Thanks! I've read about Ino- will probably give that a try.

Note that Ino is very small and strictly a sushi bar and doesn't serve other types of Japanese food.

I really enjoy the food at Takara. Got some traditional dishes there.

Takara changed ownership a while ago, and it hasn't tasted the same for me since.

I agree. Takara would not be a top choice for me in J-town.

Kappa really feels like you are in Japan. I've been twice and highly recommend it. This was my most recent review with lots of pictures:
