Amazing homemade mozzarella in Yonkers.

The A&S Italian Pork Store in the High Ridge shopping center has a to die for mozzarella. It is fresh made every day and is absolutely excellent with a buttery flavor to it. I lived and worked for a time on an artisinal, grass fed, raw milk dairy farm making cheese and this is a great mozzarella.

I don't know if it's a "chain" , but A&S in Montrose also makes daily wonderful mozzarella (and lots of other great stuff!)for those further north...I linked a recent NY Times article about it.

I think it must be a chain. There's one in Thornwood, too, which also has superb mozzarella, etc. It's a fun store to visit, as samples are often offered and banter is always in the air. I wonder how many A+S Pork Stores there are? Googling reveals some in NJ too!

Not exactly a chain, but owned by extended family members. The original is in Park Slope and in addition to the one in Thornwood (owned by Mario), there is one in Millwood (owned by Michael-Mario's nephew) - not sure about ownership of the ones in Yonkers or Montrose.

Great selection of meats, cold cuts, breads and most anything you'd expect to see in an italian deli

The prepared food is generally good, they make a delicious Osso Bucco, great pasta sauce, chicken or eggplant parm, etc.
AND they are really nice people.

I like all their dry sausages and hard cheeses. I haven't tried their prepared foods but I plan on trying some of their stuff soon and will report back.

wow. great tip. thanks. That's not far from all the darn baby stores around there, where we find ourselves all to often... next time I know where to stop...
