Portuguese restaurants in Lauderdale area
I was in the Deerfield Beach area earlier today and wanted to try a Portuguese restaurant a friend told me about a few months ago. Alas, Chico's on north Dixie Highway is now a Brazilian restaurant rather than Portuguese.
Still have a yen for some "bacalhau". Does anyone know where I might be able to find this dish in the Lauderdale area?
Oh, the Brazilian Chico's didn't serve bacalhau!
What??? Since when? I just reviewed Chico's for the New Times and they darn well were a Portuguese restaurant when I ate there two or three weeks ago. 15 bacalhau entrees on the dinner menu, and though they also have a Brazilian menu at dinnertime, the chef and the manager were both Portuguese. The bacalhau a gomes de sa was yummy.. the mixed seafood grill was overcooked.
I don't know of any other real Portuguese restaurants in Broward, though from talking to the chef at Chico's, if it really has changed over suddenly, it would be because he's moved to a new (bigger? nicer?) Portuguese restaurant nearby.
I may have to enlist my Portuguese-speaking partner in crime to investigate.
I would venture to say you are correct from the point you make about a dinner menu.
It was most likely a communication problem between us. I was there at 11:15 in the morning and they were just getting opened up and I was the lone person in there. The waitress brought me a menu but before I had a chance to peruse it, she returned with another. Before looking at it, I asked if they had the bacalhau. She shook her head, not understanding my question. She left and returned with another woman who appeared to be the cook. This lady proceeded, with very limited English, to tell me they had no bacalhau and that it was a "Brazilian" menu. I, unfortunately, assumed the place had changed over to a Brazilian place. Thanks for helping me understand the problem I had.
I look forward to trying again some evening when I'm up that way. In the meantime I would enjoy reading your review of Chico's. How could I go about obtaining a copy?
Whoa! The Portuguese-speaking girlfriend just called and -- yikes -- Chico's is now, suddenly, a Brazilian restaurant. I wonder what happened.
At least I got my first -- and only -- plate of bacalhau a gomes de sa in five years.
